Firmware Update: Front Shift Next

Updated March 25, 2025 by BetterShifting Terry

As part of the 12-speed GRX release, Shimano just enabled Front Shift Next for 12-speed road Di2.

This feature lets you shift the front derailleur using a single button. Press the button, and the front derailleur will shift to the next chain ring. If it's in the big ring, it'll shift to the small ring, and vice-versa.

To enable this feature you need to update the firmware on your shifters, battery, and rear derailleur. When that's done, open up the e-tube mobile app and assign 'FRONT SHIFT NEXT' to any button or switch.

Note: only road/gravel shift levers are supported. Front Shift Next does not work with the time-trial shifters or 11-speed units.

Updating the firmware on 12-speed wireless shifters can be a challenge, so be sure to read my guide on updating 12-speed wireless shifters if you've not done this before.
